Previous Research Projects on Odours

The EOL has completed more than 100 research and consulting projects for various clients.  The major projects are listed below:

  • Odour Impact Assessment for Proposed Extension of Shipping Channels, Port of Newcastle (2003)

  • Development of odour impact assessment procedures for dairy farms (2001 - 2003)
A research project funded by Australian
Dairy Research and Development Corporation (DRDC).
    • Develop a dairy odour emission database for typical dairy farms in different regions in Australia
    • Establish a sampling procedure for determination of odour emission rates from dairy farms
    • Develop odour impact criteria for dairy farms using odour intensity and community survey methods
    • Develop generic odour setback distances for Australian dairy farms
    • Establish odour impact assessment procedures for Australian dairy farms

  • Development of odour impact criteria for the Australian pig industry (Australian Pork Limited, APL project 1471) (1999 - 2002)
    • Developmnet of odour impact criteria for piggeries based on the relationship between odour intensity and odour concentration
    • Provision of basis for standardisation of odour dispersion modelling procedures for pig odour impact assessment
    • Validation of the odour impact assessment procedure using the odour community survey

  • Development and verification of fetch in odour dispersion modelling procedure for area sources (1999 - 2000)

    Sydney Water Corporation

  • Odour and ammonia emission from broiler chicken growout farms (1996 - 1998)
    (
    Executive Summary)
    • Quantification of odour and ammonia emissions from broiler farms in NSW and Victoria.
    • Establishment of a broiler odour emission database.
    • Prediction of chicken odour impact based on measurement of odour concentration and odour intensity in conjunction with air dispersion modelling.
    • Recommendation of remedial measures to reduce poultry odour emissions
The final report can be purchased from RIRDC web site. The price of the report is A$15.00 plus postage and handling.
